The Kenyan Believe in Ancestral Spirits

[ad_1]

The extended family is the basis of the social structure in any Kenyan community. This is made up of relatives and friends from both the husband and wife’s side. It is not uncommon to find a nuclear family living with the extended family in the same compound. Most men when they marry, move the new family just a few yards away from there parent’s home. When the parents of the man get old, they come to live with him and his family. There is always a group to turn to in times of problems.

The Kenya people place a lot of respect and reverence for the departed loved ones and ancestors. They believe that the spirits of those who have passed on still live on and need to be acknowledged. It is not uncommon to find some people throwing some food or drinks on the ground for the ancestors to take before they do.

The ancestors are believed to be able to control the events in life since they are closer to God than the mortal man. Therefore, it is very important that you do not offend the spirits of the departed. Offerings are offered every now and then to appease them. A baby can also be named after a departed ancestor so as his spirit can live on in the child. When the ancestors are pleased, they ensure that there is harmony, provision and peace in the entire community. This though is not ancestral worship as such but just showing respect and reverence to the departed ones. Its actually a taboo to speak ill of a departed one in Kenya.
